Many of today's GIS software packages are very easy for GIS professionals to use on a daily basis. However, for the typical casual user, they require more expertise and support than is readily available.

One solution to this problem is to create custom end-user applications that model how the user needs to work with the GIS. The applications can range from creating simple forms-based database solutions to complex graphical programs that directly manipulate the GIS. However, the most common GIS applications simply incorporate the standard functionality of a GIS package into a simplified graphical front end—usually referred to as a "wizard".
